Professor A. Ramesha Rao joined Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1976. He did the pioneering work in the area of Cancer Research at School of Life Sciences. He was one among the pioneers in emphasizing the importance of chemoprevention as a strategy for cancer control and management. The plethora of studies conducted in cancer chemoprevention owe much to his belief, in fact to his presumption that most of the cancers can be controlled and prevented via controlling life style and dietary habits.
Professor Rao rendered twenty six years of productive services to Jawaharlal Nehru University with dedicated teaching and outstanding research contribution in the field of cancer biology. He introduced and promoted the discipline of cancer biology in the Indian university system and inspired many young minds to probe in to the riddle of this mysterious disease, and design preventive as well as curative strategies. We can never forget his devotion and popularization of taking science to the society.
He had a genuine love for science that always inspired young learners and researchers to cultivate the habit of thinking and reasoning rather than merely enriching the knowledge of the subject. Whosoever got in touch with him has experienced an everlasting good feeling. He enchanted us with his unassuming, generous and pleasant nature. His scholarship galvanized by humility and his uprightness conjugated with magnanimity took him to a greater height of respectability.
Today, Professor Rao is not with us, however, his teachings, trainings, humane and friendly nature have enriched our lives as well as academic pursuits.
